Prinsloo 7s: Daystar Falcons post biggest opening-round victory as MMUST upset Strath

Daystar Falcons RFC registered the biggest victory of the opening round of the 2026 Prinsloo 7s, while KCB Rugby, Kabras RFC, Kenya Harlequins, and Catholic Monks all began their National Sevens Circuit campaigns with impressive wins.

The biggest surprises of the round came as MMUST RFC stunned defending champions Strathmore Leos 19-14, while hosts Nakuru RFC suffered a narrow 12-7 defeat to Blak Blad RFC.

Kenya Harlequin cruise

Kenya Harlequins opened their campaign with a convincing 26-7 victory over Embu RFC.

Matthew Ouma crossed over for the opening try after breaking down the left wing before Quins added two converted tries to take a commanding 19-0 lead into the halftime break.

Embu RFC got on the scoreboard in the second half, but Harlequins responded with another try to seal a comfortable 26-7 victory.

Kabras RFC claimed a hard-fought 26-12 victory over Mwamba RFC.

Ray Olindi opened the scoring from a quick tap after Mwamba conceded a penalty before Roy Maruti sliced through the defence following a clever dummy to extend Kabras’ lead to 12-0.

Zoeline Buyuni scored under the posts to reduce the deficit to 12-7 before halftime, and Shakir Bosire crossed over early in the second half to level the scores at 12-12.

Kabras responded brilliantly as Ray Olindi completed his brace to restore the lead before Griffin Chao finished off a flowing move, following an offload from Mike Lukusi, to secure a 26-12 win.

Daystar Falcons record

Daystar Falcons RFC produced the most dominant performance of the opening round, thrashing Kisumu RFC 41-0.

Augustine Owino opened the scoring with a converted try before Patrick Odongo and Arnold Agonda added further tries to give the Falcons a commanding 17-0 halftime lead.

Paul Murwa joined the scoresheet early in the second half before Owino completed his brace. Agonda also grabbed his second try of the match, while Duncan Olile added another score to complete an emphatic 41-0 victory.

MMUST stun Leos

MMUST RFC produced the upset of the opening round by defeating defending champions Strathmore Leos 19-14.

Patrick Kluivert gave Strathmore an early 7-0 lead, but Don Litali responded to reduce the deficit before Desmond Kirwa crossed over from an offload to put MMUST ahead.

Rayan Makaka then intercepted a pass and raced away to score MMUST’s third try for a 19-7 advantage.

Nahashon Mwangemi narrowed the gap with a converted try, but despite Don Litali receiving a yellow card late in the match, MMUST held firm with six players on the field to secure a famous victory.

Catholic Monks grind out

Catholic Monks battled past NYS Spades 12-5 in a tightly contested encounter.

Philip Walukhana opened the scoring in the corner before Isaac Kubasu capitalized on a quick tap penalty to extend the lead to 12-0.

KCB defeat Nondescripts

Defending National Sevens Circuit champions KCB Rugby recovered from a slow start to defeat Nondescripts RFC 29-12.

Captain Elvis Lukusi opened the scoring with a powerful solo effort before Chrispin Omondi responded for Nondescripts to edge them ahead 7-5.

Vincent Onyala bulldozed his way over the line to restore KCB’s lead before halftime.

In the second half, Floyd Wabwire capitalized on a kick ahead before Onyala completed his brace to stretch the lead. Nondescripts scored late, but Festus Shiasi responded almost immediately to wrap up a convincing 29-12 victory.

Blak Blad shock hosts

Blak Blad RFC stunned tournament hosts Nakuru RFC with a hard-fought 12-7 victory.

Nakuru led 7-0 at halftime before Bryson Ogamba burst through the defence to score under the posts, with the successful conversion leveling the scores at 7-7.

Blak Blad later crossed over for the decisive try to complete an impressive comeback victory.

Menengai Oilers vs Impala postponed

The scheduled Pool D fixture between Menengai Oilers and Impala RFC was not played as Impala were not yet at the venue. Tournament organizers are expected to provide further communication regarding the outcome of the fixture.
