Friends School Bokoli etched their name into the history books after clinching their first-ever Western Region Secondary Schools Rugby 7s title, defeating Butula Boys 14-0 in Saturday’s final at Bungoma High School.
The victory capped a remarkable debut appearance at the regional championships for Bokoli, who also secured qualification to the 2026 KSSSA National Rugby 7s Championships in Thika.
A key figure behind Bokoli’s success was Eliud Okwemba, the National and East Africa Rugby 7s-winning coach who joined the school from Koyonzo High School. His influence was evident throughout the tournament as Bokoli produced an unbeaten run to the title.
Despite missing out on the Bungoma County crown earlier in the season, Bokoli arrived at the regional games with purpose and delivered one of the tournament’s standout performances.
In the final, Bokoli struck first through a remarkable long-range kick from inside their own 22. The ball took a favourable bounce, allowing their chaser to gather and score beneath the posts for a converted try and a 7-0 lead.

They doubled their advantage almost immediately after the restart when another fortunate bounce worked in their favour, enabling them to race away for a second converted try.
Neither side managed to add points in the second half as Bokoli’s resolute defence shut out Butula to seal a memorable 14-0 victory.
The triumph sees Bokoli join Butula as the Western Region’s boys’ representatives at the National Games in Thika.
Mbakalo Lift Girls’ Crown
In the girls’ competition, Mbakalo Girls were equally impressive as they defeated Kimobo Girls 24-7 in the final to capture the Western Region title.
Mbakalo and Kimobo will represent the region at the National Championships after impressive campaigns in Bungoma.
