Kenya 7s Shujaa finished day one of the 2026 HSBC SVNS 2 second leg in Montevideo with a dominant 20-0 win over Belgium in their round three match on Saturday, March 21, securing their second victory of the tournament.
After suffering an opening loss to USA earlier in the day, Shujaa responded impressively with back-to-back wins against Canada and Belgium to climb into contention in the pool standings.
Kenya controlled proceedings from the outset against Belgium and struck early in the second minute when Kevin Wekesa finished off a flowing attacking move.
The play originated from a ruck initiated by George Ooro, with Nygel Amaitsa releasing Samuel Asati, who quickly shifted the ball wide for Wekesa to fend off Belgium’s John Lindberg before touching down.
Amaitsa missed the conversion as Shujaa led 5-0.
The pressure continued to build, and Vincent Onyala added Kenya’s second try in the seventh minute to extend the advantage to 10-0 heading into halftime, although the conversion attempt again drifted wide.

Shujaa maintained control after the restart, with Patrick Odongo crossing in the 10th minute following another well-worked phase from a ruck.
Samuel Asati combined with Amaitsa, whose offload allowed Odongo to finish for a 15-0 lead after another missed conversion.
Shujaa 4th Try
Kevin Wambua’s side kept attacking momentum, introducing Floyd Wabwire shortly after, and the substitute made an immediate impact by scoring Kenya’s fourth try in the 12th minute.
Amaitsa’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful, but Kenya had already established a commanding 20-0 cushion.
Further substitutions followed as David Nyangige, Dennis Abukuse and John Okoth entered the match while Belgium searched for a response.
Kenya were briefly reduced to six players after Samuel Asati was sin-binned for an infringement in the closing stages, but Belgium failed to capitalise on the numerical advantage as Shujaa safely managed possession before kicking the ball out to seal the win.
The result sees Kenya move to third place in the standings on seven points, two behind leaders Germany. Shujaa will next face Germany on Sunday, March 22 at 21:55 EAT.
Kenya Lionesses Stumble
In the women’s competition, the Kenya Lionesses closed their day with a 19-14 defeat to Spain their second loss in three matches despite one victory earlier.
The Lionesses now sit fourth in the standings on four points, three behind leaders South Africa, and will face the table-toppers next on Sunday, March 22 at 20:23 EAT.
