Kenya 7s Shujaa registered their first victory of the 2026 HSBC SVNS 2 second leg in Montevideo after defeating Canada 19-5 in their tound two match at Estadio Charrúa on Saturday, March 21.
The win made sure they bounced back strongly from their opening 14-10 loss to USA.
Kenya made an immediate statement, striking inside the opening minute when Christant Ojwang crossed over for the first try.
Nygel Amaitsa successfully added the conversion making amends after missed kicks in the previous match to give Shujaa a 7-0 lead.
Momentum remained firmly with Kevin Wambua’s charges as Floyd Wabwire added Kenya’s second try in the fourth minute, again converted by Amaitsa to stretch the advantage to 12-0.
Kevin Wekesa Try for Shujaa
Moments later, Kevin Wekesa beat his markers down the right flank to score Kenya’s third try, with Amaitsa maintaining a perfect kicking record to hand Shujaa a commanding halftime cushion.

Canada attempted to respond after the break, introducing Kyle Timberly, Ethan Turner and Lachlan Kratz in search of a turnaround, while Kenya rotated their squad with Dennis Abukuse, Patrick Odongo and Festus Shiasi entering the contest.
The North Americans eventually broke through in the closing stages when Ian Jones finished off a well-worked attacking move following quick passes from a ruck near Kenya’s try area, reducing the deficit to 19-5.
Kenya later introduced David Nyagige for Samuel Asati as they managed the final minutes to seal the win.
The result lifts Shujaa to second place in the standings on four points, two behind leaders USA, who defeated Uruguay 29-14 in another round two fixture.
Kenya will next face Belgium at 00:08 EAT in their third match.
Kenya Lionesses with 1st win
In the women’s competition, the Kenya Lionesses recovered from an earlier 19-5 China setback to edge Argentina 12-10, with tries from Janet Okelo in the first half and Sinaida Nyachio late in the match.
Despite the victory, the Lionesses remain bottom of the standings on three points, while South Africa lead the table with four points.
Lionesses face Spain next at 22:59 EAT.
