National Champions Butula High School emerged victorious in the Maseno Opens 15s tournament, clinching the title after a hard-fought 7-3 win against Maseno School in the final showdown on Sunday.

Securing a converted try proved to be the winning move for Butula, as Maseno managed to drill in a penalty in what was a closely contested final. This victory marks Butula’s second preseason trophy under the leadership of coach Libondo Shimenga, following their earlier success at the Alliance Opens.

Butula’s journey to the final saw them narrowly edge out Anthony with a 5-0 victory, followed by a hard-fought 11-7 win against Vihiga in the semifinals. On the other hand, Maseno School, serving as the hosts, defeated Bungoma 6-0 in the quarters rounds before securing a commanding 19-3 victory over Kabianga in the semifinals.

These tournaments serve as crucial preparation for the participating schools ahead of the upcoming 2024 school games. The Eastern Region has been designated to host the secondary school National games from April 6-14, 2023, in Machakos County.

The event will feature various sporting disciplines including Rugby 15s, Athletics, Basketball 5*5, Hockey, Handball, and Swimming. Additionally, the region will host junior school athletics, cross-country, handball, basketball, and swimming during the same period.
