Prinsloo 7s: Kabras, MMUST, KCB and Blak Blad finish day 1 unbeaten

Kabras RFC, MMUST RFC, KCB Rugby and KU Blak Blad completed an unbeaten run on day one of the 2026 Prinsloo 7s as the Cup quarter-final line-up took shape at the Nakuru Athletics Club.

The four sides were joined in the last eight by hosts Nakuru RFC, Daystar Falcons, Nondescripts RFC and Kenya Harlequin after an action-packed opening day.

Kabras edge Harlequins to top Pool A

Kabras RFC topped their pool after edging Kenya Harlequin 12-10 in one of the matches of the day.

Harlequins raced into a 10-0 halftime lead courtesy of tries from Ramadhan Masete and Upper Hill youngster Shakur Nyongesa, with the latter finishing off a quick-tap move after diving over in the corner.

Kabras mounted a spirited comeback in the second half. Patrick Sabatia beat his marker to score under the posts, reducing the deficit to 10-7 before Rayvon Ambale crossed over from a scrum move after a darting run by Mike Lukusi. Kabras held on for a hard-fought 12-10 victory.

Mwamba RFC registered their first victory of the tournament with a 26-12 win over Embu RFC.

Brian Mutugi starred for Mwamba, scoring twice to hand his side a 12-0 lead. Embu responded through Derrick Gichoni, who sliced through the defence to cut the deficit to 12-5 at the break.

Mwamba stretched their advantage to 19-5 early in the second half before Zeolin Buyuni touched down under the posts, with Tony Omondi converting for a 26-5 lead.

Embu grabbed a late consolation try as the match ended 26-12.

MMUST complete perfect pool campaign

MMUST RFC finished top of their pool with a perfect record after defeating Kisumu RFC 12-7.

The first half ended scoreless before Tyson Juma broke the deadlock, with Flavian Otiyo converting for a 7-0 lead.

Kisumu responded with a converted try to level the scores at 7-7, but Juma completed his brace late in the match to seal another impressive victory for the university side.

Daystar advance after Leos stalemate

Daystar Falcons secured a place in the Cup quarter-finals after battling to a 5-5 draw against Strathmore Leos.

Heading into the fixture, both teams had one win and needed a positive result to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Patrick Odongo gave Daystar a 5-0 halftime lead after a brilliant run down the left wing. Strathmore responded through Samuel Wafula, who crossed over to level the scores.

Daystar then kicked the ball into touch late on to settle for the draw, a result that was enough to send them into the last eight.

KCB maintain perfect record

KCB Rugby finished top of their pool with a flawless record after defeating Catholic Monks 26-5.

Kenya international Festus Shiasi opened the scoring before Victor Omupere replied for the Monks to make it 7-5. The Monks came close to another try before halftime but knocked the ball on from a kick.

George Ooro extended KCB’s lead in the second half before Shiasi completed his brace to make it 19-5. Richel Wangila then dived over beneath the posts to seal a convincing 26-5 victory.

Nondescripts RFC secured their second win of the tournament with a disciplined 10-0 victory over NYS Spades.

The Rangers scored two unconverted tries in the opening half to take a 10-0 lead before producing a solid defensive display after the break to deny NYS any points and confirm their place in the quarter-finals.

Blak Blad stay perfect

KU Blak Blad continued their impressive debut campaign by making it three wins from three with a 17-5 victory over Impala RFC.

Impala struck first to lead 5-0 before Blak Blad responded with a converted try to move ahead 7-5.

The university side added another try before halftime to lead 12-5, and Rugar Siso powered through the defence in the second half to score the decisive try and complete another impressive win.

Hosts Nakuru RFC booked their place in the Cup quarter-finals after defeating Menengai Oilers 14-7 in the Nakuru derby, the final match of the day.

Wanyore opened the scoring before Oilers were reduced to six players following a yellow card to James Atsanga. Nakuru capitalised on the numerical advantage to score a second try and open up a 14-0 lead.

Glacious Owino crossed over for Oilers to reduce the deficit to 14-7 before halftime, but Nakuru held firm throughout the second half to seal victory and a place in the last eight.
