Prinsloo 7s: Kenya Harlequin, Kabras, MMUST seal Cup quarter-final spots

The 2026 Prinsloo 7s continued to produce surprise results as Kenya Harlequin, Kabras RFC, MMUST and KCB Rugby booked places in the Cup quarter-finals with a pool match to spare at the Nakuru Athletic Club.

Blak Blad saw off Menengai Oilers also moving to the six points in the pool with a match to spare.

Kenya Harlequin through

Kenya Harlequin made it two wins from two after edging Mwamba RFC 12-5 in a hard-fought encounter to secure their place in the last eight.

Quins moved to six points after taking a narrow 5-0 lead into the break before Mathew Ouma crossed over in the second half to extend the advantage to 12-0. Mwamba’s Zeolin Buyuni scored a consolation try in the final minute, but it came too late to spark a comeback.

Kabras RFC also confirmed their place in the quarter-finals with a commanding 47-0 victory over Embu RFC.

The Sugarmen opened the scoring from a scrum move that released Griffin Chao on the left wing for a converted try and a 7-0 lead.

Rayvon Ambale then took a quick tap penalty before setting up Fredrick Wangila, who sold a dummy and raced over to make it 14-0.

Kabras struck again after Patrick Sabatia recovered the restart and linked up with Wangila, who offloaded to Ambale for another converted try and a 21-0 advantage.

Chao then produced the try of the match, sprinting from deep inside his own half to score a converted try as Kabras headed into the break leading 28-0.

Andrew Wangila opened the second-half scoring before Adrian Khwesa came off the bench to power over for another try, stretching the lead to 42-0. Mike Lukusi completed the rout with a late try after exploiting space on the short side.

MMUST proceed

MMUST joined the quarter-finalists after edging Daystar University 10-7 in one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. Daystar had opened their campaign with a dominant 41-0 victory.

Buoyed by their opening win over Strathmore Leos, MMUST started brightly and went ahead through debutant Alwine Kwemoi for a 5-0 lead.

They added another try before halftime through Clarence Hope from a scrum move. Daystar responded with a well-worked try by Paul Murwa to reduce the deficit to 10-7, but MMUST held on for a famous victory.

Strathmore Leos bounced back from their opening defeat with a convincing 36-0 victory over Kisumu RFC.

Looking to recover from their 19-14 loss to MMUST, the Leos took control through tries from Amon Wamalwa and Victor Odhiambo to lead 10-0 at the break.

Gabriel Ayimba touched down in the corner early in the second half before Patrick Kluivert sold a dummy to score, extending the lead to 22-0 after the conversion.

Samuel Wafula added another try before Kluivert completed his brace to wrap up a dominant 36-0 win.

Nondies finally win

Nondescripts also returned to winning ways with a 17-10 victory over Catholic University Monks.

The Rangers struck first through Ronnie Omondi before capitalising on a yellow card to CUEA to score their second try. The Monks responded after the break with a well-worked try, but Nondies restored their cushion with a crucial third score before CUEA grabbed a late consolation.

KCB Rugby booked their place in the quarter-finals after overcoming a spirited National Youth Service (NYS) side 14-0.

The Bankers once again made a slow start but took a 7-0 lead into halftime courtesy of Emmanuel Opondo’s converted try.

NYS came agonisingly close to levelling the scores but knocked the ball on while grounding what would have been a certain try. KCB sealed the victory late on when Richel Wangila crossed over to make it 14-0.

Hosts Nakuru RFC registered their first win of the tournament with a 25-5 victory over Impala RFC.

Impala, who arrived late after travel challenges and consequently missed their opening fixture, fell behind early when Kenya Sevens centre Chrissant Ojwang scored in the corner. The Gazelles responded to level at 5-5 before Ojwang restored Nakuru’s lead.

The hosts added two more tries to take a 20-5 advantage before Ojwang completed his brace to seal a comfortable 25-5 victory.

Blak Blad continued their giant-killing run with an impressive 17-12 victory over Menengai Oilers.

Glacious Owino opened the scoring for Oilers with a fine individual effort, but Blak Blad responded with back-to-back tries to take a 10-7 lead.

Achadius Khwesa then shrugged off his marker and raced away to score, extending the advantage to 17-7. Despite being reduced to six players after receiving a yellow card, Blak Blad held firm as Veron Kaburu scored his debut try for Oilers, but the comeback fell short as the newcomers claimed another memorable victory.
