Monate Akuei joins America’s Major Rugby League Champions

2022 Major Rugby League Championsm the Rugby New York, have signed former Nakuru RFC forward Monate Akuei.

Akuei previously played for New York Old Blue before joining the MLR, which is a professional rugby union competition for privately owned, for-profit franchise clubs in North America.

Monate Akuei’s signing

The club confirmed Akuei’s signing on Thursday via social media, stating, “Welcome to Rugby New York Monate Akuei. We’re thrilled to announce the signing of our newest Ironworker. A dynamic loose forward, Monate also has an inspiring backstory that we can’t wait to share with you. For now, we look forward to seeing him in NY colors.”

Akuei expressed his excitement about joining Rugby New York and becoming the first Kenyan-born South Sudanese player in the MLR, saying, “Dreams do come true! First Kenyan born South Sudanese in the MLR.”

Akuei has been in the USA since 2020 and has already achieved significant success in rugby. He was part of the Kenya Simbas team in 2019 and helped them win the Elgon Cup in 2019. He also played for Kenya Morans and was part of the team that won the Safari 7s.

About the Rugby New York

His new side is nicknamed the Ironworkers, and it is professional rugby union team based in New York City that is a member of Major League Rugby. 

It is currently second on the Major League Rugby 2023 Eastern Conference standings with 20 points after seven matches played and it will be keen to defend the title.
