Menengai Oilers’ centre dies after attack by unknown assailants

Menengai Oilers centre Anthony Kibet has died following stab wounds after being attacked by unknown assailants on Saturday night. 

The club has announced that another player who Scrummage Africa understands is  Ibrahim Bobo is in hospital undergoing treatment following the attack. The club has confirmed that the lock is in stable condition.

Succumbed to stab wounds

“Menengai Oilers Rugby Club would like to report that one of our players has succumbed to stab wounds following an attack by unknown assailants last night, ” a statement by the club said.

The two were returning home after watching a football match when they were allegedly attacked by a Boda Boda gang which stabbed them, the club said.

The motive of the attack is yet to be established with the case now being investigated by the police.

“The player was in the company of another, who is now receiving medical attention at a local hospital, were enroute home from watching a soccer match when it is said the Boda Boda gang dramatically accosted and stabbed them several times,” the statement further reads.

“We would to report that the injured player is in stable condition and cooperating with the police to provide any information that would help establish the motive of the attack and lead to the arrest of the unknown persons involved,” the statement adds.

Club baffled

“The incident that happened yesterday has left both the Club management and other players baffled as the motive of the attack by suspected thug running on a motorcycle is yet to be known. The Police are investigating the attack and will release a full report in due course.  The club will provide more info as soon as possible.” the statement concludes.
Kibet’s death is a blow to Oilers as he was part of their 7s campaign as they were crowned National Sevens Champions in the 2022 campaign. He has also been an integral member of the 15s sides.
