Commonwealth Rugby 7s Games day one saw the sides play two matches each in the pool stage with defending Champions New Zealand, Kenya 7s, Fiji, South Africa, and Scotland maintaining a 100%win record.

Australia also stayed unbeaten while England and Wales bounced back to winning ways after disappointing opening rounds.

Scotland and South Africa joined Kenya 7s in the men’s quarter-finals while Fiji, and New Zealand lead their pools with perfect win records.

Pool D

Kenya 7s finished the first day of competition on top of the table after picking up two victories. In the first match of the day, Damian McGrath’s charges scored five tries to defeat neighbours Uganda 7s 27-14.

Shujaa then scored seven tries in the second pool round encounter against Jamaica, winning 45-0 to go to the quarterfinals. They have six points while Australia who beat Jamaica 62-0 and drew 12-12 with Uganda are on five points.

Uganda are on three points following a draw and a loss. Jamaica have two points after two losses.  Kenya and Australia will meet in the final pool game with the winner set to top the pool.

Pool A

New Zealand lead Pool A after pummeling Sri Lanka 63-5 with nine converted tries in their first match. They stretched their lead to six points after edging Samoa 19-17 in the second match of the day.

They will win the pool if they defeat England in the last game of the group on Saturday.

Samoa are second in the pool with four points after their loss to the All Blacks sevens, which earned them a point in addition to the three points they gained in the first round’s 34-0 triumph against England.

England are in third place with four points, while Sri Lanka is in last place with two points.

Pool C

Olympic champions Fiji, who have never won Commonwealth gold, sit on top of pool C after beating Zambia convincingly 52-0 followed by a hard fought win over Canada by a 19-12 score. Zambia scored their first ever Commonwealth Games try in a 38-5 defeat to Wales, who were earlier beaten 31-0 by Canada and will likely need to pull off a shock result against Fiji to progress to the quarter-finals.
