Winning starts for KCB, Strathmore, Homeboyz and Kabras at Driftwood 7s

Driftwood 7s defending Champions KCB Rugby,  Christie 7s winners Strathmore Leos, Kabras RFC, Homeboyz, Mwamba Rugby and Western Bulls kicked off their campaign impressively in the opening round of the competition at Mombasa Sports Club.

In a Pool B encounter, KCB, who won the 2019 tournament with a 26-21 triumph against Impala Saracens, struck half a century against the KRU Championship side Jumia Pay South Coast Pirates. A 51-0 victory saw the bankers’ pick the 12th win in 13 National Sevens Circuit matches.

Kabras RFC also managed a clean sheet defeating Daystar Falcons 28-0. Max Adaka-coached side scored four converted tries to win the match.

Both KCB and Kabras are tied on three points in the pool but separated by point differential. They  will book a place in the quarters if they win the second round matches.

Pool A

Strathmore Leos kicked off their title chase with an impressive 29-0 over hosts Mombasa RFC . Louis Kisia’s charges scored five tries and converted two to defeat Mombasa, who were making their debut appearance in the 2022 National 7s Campaign.

Strath were joined on winning list by Homeboyz RFC who edged 2019 finalists Impala Saracens  10-5.  To win the game, Homeboyz scored a try in each half. Captain Jan Remke scored Homeboyz’ first try of the game, and Mike Nyakundi scored in the second half to give the side three points.

Pool C

Paul Murunga’s Kenya Harlequins landed three tries and converted one to pick a 17-0 win over Nakuru RFC in a Pool C opener.

Menengai Oilers on the other hand put to 26 points past Blak Blad to extend the students losing streak in the group stages this season to seven matches in a row.

In Pool D, Two converted tries were enough for Mwamba Rugby Club to defeat Nondies.  Western Bulls who had an impressive outing in the Christie 7s also picked a win by edging student Zetech University 12-7.
