KCB, Kabras advance to Driftwood 7s quarters; Impala,Nondies bounce back

Driftwood 7s defending Champions KCB Rugby, Kabras RFC, Homeboyz and Kenya Harlequins are through to the competition’s quarter-finals after winning the second round of matches played at  Mombasa Sports Club.

KCB won its second game in the competition, defeating Daystar Falcons 15-0. Dennis Mwanja’s team advanced to the final eight with a game to spare thanks to three unconverted tries.  They have made it to the quarters for the third time in a row this season.

In the 2022 campaign, the bankers have only been defeated once. The defeat occurred three weeks ago in the Christie 7s final at RFUEA Grounds.

They are joined in the quarters by Kabras RFC who defeated Jumia Pay  South Pirates 22-5. Max Adaka charges scored four tries and converted one for the victory. The Sugarmen will compete in the quarterfinal  for the second time this season, after missing out on the Kabeberi 7s.

KCB and Kabras, both with six points, will face off in the final round to see who will finish first in the pool. Daystar and Pirates will compete for third place in the pool.

Pool A

Homeboyz RFC will return to the quarterfinals after winning two consecutive pool games. The Jamhuri-based team who missed the quarters during the Christie 7s advanced to the last eight after defeating Strathmore Leos 17-14. The Deejayz won thanks to tries from John Kibii, Amon Wamalwa, and Paul Akatch.

The defeat for Strathmore means they have to win against Impala Saracens who will also be eyeing back to back  quarterfinal qualification. Impala bounced back to winning ways following a 21-0 victory against hosts Mombasa.  Mombasa are out of the Cup contention.

Pool C

In Pool C, Kenya Harlequins picked the second win of the competition to put one foot in quarterfinals. Paul Murunga coached side defeated Blak Blad 31-0 to move to six points.  Blak Blad who have suffered the eighth consecutive Pool stage loss are out of the quarterfinal contention.

Menengai Oilers played to a 5-5 draw with their home town rivals Nakuru  RFC. Wanyore will be hoping for Oilers to lose to Quins to boost their quarterfinal chances.

Pool D

In Pool D, Mwamba Rugby Club beat Zetech for a 17-5 scoreline to reach the third successive quarters.  Kulabu have six points while  Nondies and Western Bulls are tied on four points. Nondies beat Western Bulls 19-7.
