Namibia appoint ex-Springbok as attacking consultant ahead of World Cup Qualifier repechage

Pieter Rossouw as Namibia’s backline coach in 2016

Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) has appointed former Springboks international and experienced coach Pieter Rossouw as Attacking Consultant for the upcoming Rugby World Cup Final Qualifier Tournament, scheduled for 8–18 November 2025 in Dubai.

Rossouw, widely respected for his attacking vision and tactical expertise, brings a wealth of experience from his playing days with South Africa and his coaching stints with top professional sides.

He will now link up with Namibia’s technical staff to sharpen the team’s attacking structures and execution as they prepare for the crucial repechage.

“The Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) is pleased to announce the appointment of former Springbok and renowned coach Pieter Rossouw as the Attacking Consultant for the national team’s upcoming World Cup Final Qualifier Tournament, scheduled to take place in Dubai from 8 to 18 November 2025,” the Namibia Rugby Union said in a statement.

The appointment comes as Namibia look to bounce back from their narrow 30-28 defeat to Zimbabwe in the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup final in July, a result that ended Zimbabwe’s 34-year World Cup wait and denied Namibia direct qualification.

The Welwitschias regrouped in style, however, dismantling the United Arab Emirates 86-29 in the Africa 2 vs Asia 2 play-off at Mandela National Stadium, Kampala, to keep their hopes alive.

That emphatic victory booked Namibia a place in the four-team repechage, where the winner will qualify as the 24th and final team for the expanded Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia. The 2027 edition will feature 24 nations, the largest number in the tournament’s history.

Rossouw’s role will be to ensure the Welwitschias are fully equipped to compete at the highest standard.

“His attacking vision and tactical expertise will be invaluable as Namibia prepare for this crucial stage,” NRU said in a statement, adding that they remain committed to upholding the highest standards in their World Cup campaign.

Namibia are chasing a record eighth consecutive World Cup appearance, but unlike previous editions, their path will be decided in Dubai’s high-stakes repechage.
