Why Tanga, Odongo missed kenya 7s squad to Uruguay

Kenya 7s dependable duo Patrick Odongo and Brian Tanga will be absent as side features in the World 7s Challenger Series set for Montevideo in Uruguay.

The Union in a statement confirmed that Odongo who was key in the Dubai 7s scoring 11 tries was injured in the KRU Championship match between Daystar Falcons and Kabarak University which led to him missing the trip to Eldoret to play UoE Trojans.

For Tanga, he has been ill hence missing out on the final squad. Festus, William Mwanji and Brian Mutugi have been dropped.

“Missing out are Patrick Odongo who top-scored with 11 tries in Dubai. Odongo is recovering from an injury sustained during Daystar Falcons’ KRU Championship 39-12 victory against Kabarak University three weeks ago and Brian Tanga who is recovering from illness while Festus Shiasi, William Mwanji and Brian Mutugi  are not in the travelling team,” reads a statement by KRU.

In Pool A, Kenya 7s will face Tonga, Georgia, and Portugal, while Pool B features finalists Chile, competing against Hong Kong and Mexico. Pool C comprises Uruguay, Germany, Uganda, and Papua Guinea.

Kenya 7s lead the competition standings after their impressive performance in Dubai, winning five out of six matches.

They secured victory in the Challenger Series opener by defeating Chile 12-5 in the final, with Patrick Odongo’s two crucial tries playing a significant role.

With 20 points, Kenya 7s maintain a two-point lead over Chile in the standings, while Uruguay and Germany occupy the third and fourth spots, respectively.
