Kenya 7s paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Sophia Atieno, the mother of their speedster, Patrick Odongo, following their triumphant victory in the Africa Men’s 7s tournament.

Despite the devastating loss of his mother, Odongo chose to remain with the Kenya 7s camp throughout the weekend, displaying remarkable resilience and delivering stellar performances in every match.

In the final showdown, Odongo made a significant contribution as Kenya 7s secured a 17-12 victory over South Africa, earning them a coveted spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) released a statement dedicating their tournament victory and Olympic qualification to the memory of Atieno, who passed away on September 9, 2023.

The KRU expressed admiration for Odongo’s unwavering commitment and emotional strength in remaining with the team and playing a pivotal role in achieving victory and Olympic qualification.

“We dedicate our victory at the Rugby Africa 7s and subsequent qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympics to the late Sophia Atieno Ogak, who passed away on Saturday 9 September 2023,” KRU announced.

“She is the mother of our squad member, Patrick Odongo who showed great resolve in staying with the squad and playing a crucial role for us in sealing victory and Olympic qualification.

“Let us keep Patrick in our thoughts and prayers during this time. May the late Sophia Atieno Ogak’s soul Rest In Peace,” the statement concluded.
