Kenya Harlequins playmaker Amon Wamalwa couldn’t contain his excitement after landing the season opener individual award.

Wamalwa was on Sunday named the Most Valuable Player, MVP for the Dala 7s tournament, held in Mamboleo stadium, Kisumu County.

In an exclusive interview with Scrummage Africa, the youngster was a man over the moon.

“It was a great feeling for me to receive such recognition and be acknowledged for exceptional performance on the rugby field,” he said.

Reflecting on his success, Amon credited the collective effort of his team for his achievements. He highlighted the team’s ability to quickly understand the coach’s instructions and game plans as a crucial factor in his individual success.

Amon who recently shifted his allegiance from Homeboyz also expressed gratitude towards his former teammates (Arnold Onzere, Richel Wangila) who are now his teammates in Harlequins, emphasizing the camaraderie and support they provided him, that made him settle fast.

When asked about the strategies that contributed to his standout performances, Amon mentioned Eden Agero, Simon Odongo, and Patrice Agunda as key figures who guided him.

“They advised me to focus on attacking the spaces, play my role as a playmaker, and make decisions based on what was happening on the field”.

Looking ahead to the 7s season, Amon set his sights on winning the overall circuit and helping Harlequins regain their former glory.

He acknowledged that there would be pressure on him, as he had set a high standard for himself and received messages from fans urging him to maintain his exceptional performances.

However, Amon maintained that he did not feel burdened by the pressure and was confident in his abilities.

Recalling some memorable moments from his journey, Amon mentioned the warm welcome he received from fans and the management of Harlequins during the friendly matches.

The playmaker scored six tries during the Dala tourney, and will be looking to extend when the team travels to Mombasa this weekend for the second circuit Driftwood 7s.

Quins finish 4th in the Dala sevens campaign.
