Kakamega, Koyonzo win Western Region Schools Rugby 15s openers

The Western Region Schools Rugby 15s tournament kicked off on Wednesday at Mundika High School, and fans were treated to an exciting day.

In the first match, Butula High School and Vihiga High School, who are the reigning Prescott Champions of both the National and Western Region, played to a scoreless draw.

In the second match, Kakamega School, who are the defending champions of the Western Region, had a slow start as they narrowly defeated Kimobo High School 6-3 in a closely contested encounter.

Kakamega managed to score two penalties, while Kimobo scored only one. The pressure will now be on Kakamega as they look to secure a win against Vihiga High School in their next match to advance to the knockout stage.

Koyonzo High School, who are considered the favorites in the tournament, got off to a great start, thrashing Bungoma High School 22-0.

Mike Mureithi scored a try, which was converted by Eric Simiyu, and Darrel Omondi added a second converted try to give Koyonzo a 14-0 lead. Jackson Siketa then scored a try, and the team secured a penalty to seal a convincing 22-0 victory.

Butula High School bounced back from their draw against Vihiga with an impressive performance against Kimobo, beating them 40-0.

The second round of matches is now underway, and fans can expect more exciting and competitive rugby throughout the rest of the tournament.

Kolanya beat Chavakali 6-3 in their opening match.
