Dates for Western Region under 20 trials announced

The Western Region Under 20 Rugby trials will take place on Friday 3 February 2023 at the Kakamega ASK Showground.

The trials will start at 8:30 AM and conclude at 2:00 PM. To be eligible, participants must have been born after December 31, 2002 and must bring a copy of their birth certificate.

Successful trialists will move closer to joining the Kenya Under 20 squad camp and being selected for the final team.

The Kenya Under 20 Rugby team is slated to compete in the Rugby Africa Barthes Cup, which will serve as their preparation for the World Junior Trophy, scheduled to take place at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.

Kenya will be hosting both the Barthes Cup and the Junior Trophy, with pools for the 2023 World Rugby U20 Trophy being held at Nyayo Stadium from July 15-30 having been released.

In Pool A, Scotland will be looking to bounce back from their relegation from the U20 Championship in 2019. They’ll be joined by Uruguay, as well the winner between Canada or the USA, and the second team to qualify from Africa.

Pool B will see hosts Kenya Under 20, Spain, Samoa, and Hong Kong battle it out for a spot in the finals.

Eight teams will battle over four match days at the Nyayo National Stadium with the eventual winner being promoted the U20 Championship in 2024.

Kenya will host the World Rugby U20 Trophy 2023 for the second time from 15-30 July, having previous staged the tournament in 2009. It will be the third time the tournament has been played in Africa with Zimbabwe having acted as hosts in 2016. The age-grade tournament is a key part of the international federation’s investment in increasing the competitiveness of global rugby by providing a meaningful pathway to the elite level for talented young players.

he showpiece tournaments, first held in 2008, have seen almost 1,500 players go on to make their test debut after playing on this stage, including 28 Rugby World Cup winners.
