Kenya 7s have booked a place in Sydney 7s ninth place playoff semi-final after a hard fought 17-12 extra time win over Spain in the Sydney 7s ninth place quarter played on Sunday at Allianz stadium.
The win means Kenya will now face the winner of the Tonga vs Canada match in the semis of the category slated for Sunday at 5:44 am EAT.
Shujaa eye better finish
After a disappointing start on day one, the Kenyan 7s team aimed to finish the tournament strong and improve their ranking.
In their first match on the final day, they found themselves behind as Miguel Reina scored for the Spaniards and Alejandro Laforgo converted, making the score 7-0.
However, Kenya fought back with a try from forward Herman Humwa, which was successfully converted by Anthony Omondi.
Omondi later scored a try of his own, but it was not converted, leaving the score at 12-7 in Kenya’s favor at halftime.
The final half saw Manu Moreno’s 10th minute try level the score for Spain and the scoreline remained unchanged till the 14th minute.
Kenya 7s needed a sudden death decisive try from Dennis Abukuse to win the match and stay in contention for the ninth place. Abukuse spotted a gap off a ruck and raced on to score the winning try.
