Kenya 7s knocked out of Rugby World Cup Sevens Cup contention

Kenya 7s have been eliminated from the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 Cup contention after a 22-7 loss to Argentina in the Round of 16 matches played at DHL Stadium,

The East Africans will now shift focus on the ninth place slot where they are scheduled to face Scotland in the Challenge Trophy quarters on Saturday 1:37 PM.

Shujaa had beaten Tonga 19-0 to get to this stage while Argentina had been given a bye in the pre-round of 16 matches.

Kenya backfoot

Argentina put Kenya on the back foot in the better of the first half and scored three tries for 15-0 lead at halftime.  Shujaa were dealt an early blow when Johnstone Olindi was sinbinned in the opening minutes.

The Argentines hit Kenya through a try by Matias Osadczuk.  Joaquin De La Vega doubled the lead before Tobias Wade made it 15-0.

In the second half, Vincent Onyala pulled back to give Kenya hopes of coming back in the clash but they were reduced to six after Sammy Oliech was yellow carded.

Alejo Lavayen sealed Argentina’s victory as he scored a try for a 22-7 win.

Editor’s pick:

Defending Champions New Zealand had a flying start in the competition. Lewis Ormond, Ngarohi McGarvey-Black. Caleb Tangitau, and braces from Amanaki Nicole and Akuila Rokolisoa all scored as New Zealand whipped Scotland 43-5.

Ireland knocked England following a 17-5 win in a match that Harry McNulty, Jordan Conroy and  Mark Roche scored in. Ireland head to the Cup quarters category while England are through the Challenge Trophy.

Nelson Epee bagged a brace in France’s 19-12 win over Canada.  Jean Pascal Barraque scored the opening try of the game.

Samoa hit USA 40-12 to reach the quarters.
