Strathmore Leos retained the Prinsloo 7s title after a dominant 24-7 win over KCB Rugby in a rain-hit final played at the Nakuru Athletic Club on Sunday evening.

The win marked their third Prinsloo 7s title after previous triumphs in 2009 and 2023. KCB were chasing a fifth Prinsloo 7s crown, having lifted the title in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017. The final was a rematch of last weekend’s decider, where KCB had edged Strathmore Leos 15-14.

Strathmore Leos too good

The students got off to a perfect start, having enjoyed a strong run throughout the day. Despite being pinned deep in their own 22, Victor Mola broke free and sprinted the length of the field to score the opening try.

The Leos extended their lead through Stanislaus Shikoli, who capitalized on an overthrown lineout to collect the loose ball and score, making it 10-0.

KCB responded with a try from Bob Muhati, who went over after a clever offload by Vincent Onyala. The conversion was successful, bringing the score to 10-7.

Leos, however, remained relentless. Mola scored his second of the day to stretch the lead to 17-7. Brian Mwendwa then took a quick tap and released Barnabas Owuor, who powered through for another try, handing the Leos a 24-7 lead at the break.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

In the second half, KCB’s Samuel Asati looked to have scored after a series of quick passes, but he knocked on the ball just before grounding it. With three minutes left, heavy rain poured down, forcing a halt to the match.

Officials called off the remainder of the game, and Strathmore Leos were declared champions.

In the third-place playoff, Catholic Monks upset Menengai Oilers with a 17-10 win. Nakuru RFC denied Kenya Harlequin a fifth-place finish once again, fighting hard to claim a 24-19 victory in a match that had to be settled in extra time.

The Challenge Trophy was won by Daystar Falcons, who cruised to a 39-0 victory over Zetech Oaks.
