Kenya 7s went down 14-5 to Australia in the SVNS World Championship opener played at Kai Tak Sports Park.

Heading into the match, Kenya had finished third in the SVNS 2 competition, while Australia came in as one of the top sides in the main SVNS circuit, finishing third in the standings with 82 points.

Shujaa had an early opportunity to take the lead, but Patrick Odongo knocked on after collecting a kick from Nygel Amaitsa, with the try subsequently ruled out.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

Australia responded through Josh Turner, who latched onto a pass from Ben Dowling to open the scoring. They would extend their lead before the break, with James Turner beating the defence on the left to hand the Aussies a 14-0 halftime advantage.

Kenya responded immediately after the restart, as Vincent Onyala recovered the kickoff and linked up with Denis Abukuse, who raced through for a try. The conversion, however, was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 14-5.

Shujaa will return to action at 3:47 p.m. against New Zealand national rugby sevens team.
