Kenya 7s suffered back-to-back defeats after going down 28-12 to New Zealand sevens team in a match played at Kai Tak Sports Park.

Shujaa came into the fixture having not beaten New Zealand in their last 13 meetings, with their last victory dating back to 2018.

Coach Kevin Wambua’s charges had earlier lost their opener 14-5 to Australia, while the All Blacks Sevens arrived confident after beating USA in their opening match.

New Zealand made a strong start and opened the scoring through Roderick Solo, whose try was successfully converted for a 7-0 lead. Sam Clarke then extended the advantage after a slick switch of play off the scrum saw the All Blacks attack the left edge to go 14-0 up.

Kenya responded through Kevin Wekesa, who showed raw power to beat two defenders in the corner and reduce the deficit to 14-5.

In the second half, Brady Rush capitalised on space, picking a pass and outpacing George Ooro to stretch the lead to 21-5. Nygel Amaitsa pulled one back for Shujaa with a well-worked try under the posts, which was converted to make it 21-12.

However, Kele Lasaqa sealed the win for New Zealand after finishing off a well-timed offload to close out the match.

With the defeat, Shujaa remain bottom of the pool without a point and will return to action on Saturday against the USA.
