unbeaten Catholic Monks, MMUST and Mwamba advance to Dala 7s quarters

Nondies, Mwamba Rugby Club, MMUST, and Catholic Monks are through to the Dala 7s Cup quarters scheduled for Sunday at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo.

They join defending Champions  KCB Rugby, Homeboyz, Menengai Oilers and Strathmore Leos who had earlier qualified.

POOL A

Mwamba Rugby Club managed to reach the quarters for the fourth time in a row this season after narrowly overpowering Nondies 21-15. Nondies headed to this match fresh from winning against Nakuru RFC and hosts Kisumu.

Nondies had three unconverted tries in the opening half. Mwamba RFC’s captain Eliakim Kichoi was however quick to react for his side, scoring a converted brace that would keep them in tabs with their opponents. Tony added another unconverted brace for Mwamba to capture a late 24-15 lead for the side.

Nakuru RFC defeated Kisumu RFC 19-14 to claim their second pool win but will miss the quarters for the third time in a row.

Home advantage was not enough to push Kisumu RFC to the first win. Kisumu took advantage of their numerical advantage to score a try that was successfully converted. Nakuru RFC would then respond with a try thanks to Chrissant Ojwang. Donald Makanyize added the extras. The Nakuru-based club finally roared to glory by another try which went unconverted bringing the full-time scores to 19-14.

Pool B 

Menengai Oilers topped Pool B with a 100% win record after a 21-14 win over  Kabras RFC in the final pool stage match to deny the latter a quarterfinal chance.

Dennis Abukuse scored a brace for the Oilers which Mark Kwemoi converted. Kabras managed a try in the  half through Alfred Orege, bringing the half time scores to 14-7.

In the final both sides had a try each but it was the Nakuru based side that got the maximum points.

MMUST Rugby club are also back to the quarters after drawing 12-12 with Daystar. The draw sees end them day with six points.

Both teams came to this all eyeing a win with a quarterfinal slot at stake for MMUST Rugby Club.

MMUST dominated the first half, scoring two tries and converting one. Daystar came in stronger after the break to take charge of the second half, scoring two tries and a single conversion.

The match ended in a 12-12 draw.

Pool C

KCB maintained their perfect run in the pool phase this season as they  defeated Strathmore Leos 21-10 .  The bankers had earlier won against Blak Blad and Impala Saracens.

Strathmore Leos had also confirmed a place in the quarters after beating Blad and Impala.    They started strongly, scoring two tries.

KCB scored their opening try through Elvis Olukusi while Brian Wahinya added the second try.  Michael Wanjala sealed the victory with a try that was converted by Wahinya.

Blak Blad first win of the tournament came as a 25-5. The two sides will drop to the challenge trophy

 Pool D

Catholic Monks stayed unbeaten in the tournament after edging Zetech Oaks 10-5. The win sees them end day one with two wins and a draw while Zetech are winless.

Homeboyz also stayed unbeaten in the competition scoring three tries to beat Kenya Harlequin 19-5
