Jonathan Davies officially retires from Wales professional rugby

Former Wales, British and Irish Lions, and Scarlets center Jonathan Davies has announced his retirement from professional rugby at the age of 36.

Davies left the Scarlets following the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, after scoring 55 tries in 209 appearances across two stints with the Welsh region.

The two-time Lions tourist, who earned 96 caps for Wales, confirmed he is stepping away from the game to focus on family life. “After taking time away from the game following the end of my last season with the Scarlets, I have come to the decision to call time on my professional rugby career,” Davies shared on Instagram.

He reflected on his time spent with loved ones, saying, “I have enjoyed a break and a summer at home with my family, and been lucky enough to spend quality time with my newborn son, alongside my wife, as we embark on this new chapter together as parents.”

Davies acknowledged he will miss the camaraderie of the sport but is content with his decision. “I will inevitably miss the camaraderie of training and playing competitively alongside my teammates, but over these past few months, I have been able to assess all of my options and reflect on a career of which I am incredibly proud.”

After announcing his departure from the Scarlets, Davies initially expressed interest in seeking one final opportunity in club rugby.

Davies’ rugby journey began with junior clubs St Clears and Whitland before progressing through the Scarlets academy. Over his illustrious career, he captained Wales on four occasions and played six Tests across two tours with the British and Irish Lions—in Australia in 2013 and New Zealand in 2017, where he was named player of the series against the All Blacks.

Known affectionately as “Foxy,” Davies won two Grand Slams and two additional Six Nations Championship titles, along with representing Wales in two Rugby World Cups. He also spent two years with French side Clermont Auvergne and was instrumental in Scarlets’ Pro12 title win during the 2016-17 season.

Expressing his gratitude on Instagram, Davies said, “There are too many people to thank; the dedicated and loyal fans, quality teammates, supportive coaches, staff, friends, and most of all, my family, all who have believed in me. I am so grateful for the support, especially when faced with the challenges and setbacks of injuries. It’s been an incredible ride, with two Lions tours, two Grand Slams, and the Pro12 title to name a few.”

As he looks ahead to his future, Davies added, “I have been lucky enough to play the game professionally for 18 years, dedicating everything I have to being the best rugby player I could be,”
“I now look forward to what the next 18 will bring, as a father, a husband, and in my next professional chapter. Diolch, Foxy.”
