Okello returns as Kenya Lionesses change 1 for Uruguay trip

Kenya Lionesses head coach, Dennis Mwanja, has made a single alteration to his squad for the upcoming second leg of the Challenger Series in Montevideo from March 8-10.

Janet Okello, who plies her trade in Japan, returns to the Lionesses after missing the opening leg in Dubai. Okello replaces Diana Kemunto in the squad, marking the only change to the side that secured a second-place finish in Dubai.

Sheila Chajira is the team’s captain, leading a squad that includes Naomi Amuguni, Judith Okumu, Stella Wafula, and speedster Sharon Auma, all of whom have been retained from the previous leg.

Furthermore, Christabel Lindo, Sinaida Nyachio, Maureen Muritu, Phoebe Akinyi, and Terry Ayesa have also been included in the squad for the upcoming tournament.

The Lionesses have set a date against Belgium, Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong in Pool B. This is after finishing second to in the opening event in Dubai.

After winning the opener in Dubai, China are seeded top and they are pooled alongside Poland, Czechia and Paraguay in Pool A. The final Pool has Argentina, Uganda, Thailand and Mexico.

The series unfolds in three rounds across three continents, with the top four men’s and women’s teams in the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger 2024 earning the opportunity to participate in a promotion and relegation play-off competition at the SVNS Grand Final in Madrid from May 31 to June 2, 2024. This competition will feature teams ranked ninth to 12th from HSBC SVNS 2024.
