Mayenje Santos Secretary General Joseph Onyango has expressed confidence in the team posting good results this season despite the financial challenges they are facing.

Addressing the media in Busia, Mr Onyango said players were upbeat and ready for Sunday’s fixture against Eshimambo FC from Kakamega at Mayenje primary.

The team has been out of competitive FKF football competition for one season.

Mayenje Santos dream cut

The Busia based Mayenje Santos dream of playing in the National Super League (NSL) was dashed after FKF dramatically relegated them to Division even after emerging as the winners of the Division One in the 2022/23 season.

The Secretary-General disclosed that the decision by FKF hit the players hard and made sponsors, and partners step aside causing severe effects on the team.

“It has not been easy but we are grateful that after a one-year absence in football tournaments, we are back and players are ready to hit the ground running from Sunday this weekend,” said Onyango.

“We are aware it is not going to be easy for us now that we lost sponsors and partners who were supporting the team but we are hopeful now that we are back to the tournament they will reconsider their decision and come back to support us throughout this season,” Onyango maintained.

He observed that despite the team having not participated in last season’s Division Two league, they did not lose any player to their competitors.

“ The team is intact because all our players are available. We continued with regular training to keep players fit,” said Onyango.

Last weekend Mayenje Santos held a funds drive with a view to raising money to support the team and Onyango stated the money raised will assist in providing accommodation for players and buying training equipment.

Malaba Giants, Obuccun, Opet FC and Hoha FC are other teams from Busia participating in the Division Two 2023/24 season.

The team’s Captain Dennis Toboso echoed Onyango’s sentiments and assured that players were ready for the first game of the new season.

“ The mood among the players is good and we have promised our management nothing but good results because we are capable,” said Toboso.

He said the target is to qualify for Division One. He rallied supporters of Mayenje to come out in large numbers and back the team against Kakamega County based Eshimambo FC.

Boniface Ngeno is one of the Mayenje Santos supporters. He said they were happy that after one year of absence finally they will start watching their team play.

“This is our team and we shall continue supporting it. Players need us so from this weekend we shall come out and support them. We expect good results,” said Ngeno.
