Kakamega County Governor Fernandez Barasa has launched an education fund for the Koyonzo Rugby players and made a donation of Ksh 200,000 to support the initiative.

Koyonzo, known as the Stormers, made an impressive mark in the KSSSA Rugby 7s competitions, going unbeaten in the sub-county, county, regional, and national games. They then achieved the remarkable feat of winning their first-ever FEASSSA 7s title.

The initiative for the education fund was spearheaded by the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Sports, and Arts, Hon. Ababu Namwamba. The fund is designed to provide support to rugby players who excelled in the East African Secondary Schools Rugby Sevens Games held in Huye City.

The launch event was held at Koyonzo Boys Secondary School in Matungu Sub-County and was attended by various dignitaries. Governor Barasa expressed his support for the initiative and contributed Ksh 200,000 to bolster the fund’s efforts. He also provided Ksh 130,000 to the school, which will be distributed to nearby girls’ and primary schools as a token of appreciation for their exceptional support to the rugby team.

“I had the honour of hosting the CS, Hon. Ababu Namwamba, at Koyonzo Secondary School, where he inaugurated an Education Fund for the players who excelled in the 2023 East African Secondary School Rugby 7s Championships,”  Barasa said in a statement.

“In a show of support, I made a contribution of Ksh. 200,000 to bolster the fund’s efforts. Additionally, I provided Ksh. 130,000 to the school, for distribution among the nearby Girls’ and Primary schools, for their exceptional support to the team,” he stated.

Governor Barasa emphasized the collaborative efforts between the County Government and the National Government, particularly through CS Namwamba, to complete the construction of Bukhungu International Stadium. This project aims to position the facility as a viable alternative to Kip Keino Stadium, which is set to host the AFCON 2027 games.

In addition to doubling the County Government’s bursary fund from Ksh 2 million to Ksh 4 million in the current financial year, said his administration is committed to creating a special fund to assist budding talents academically.
