Vihiga High School are the 2022 Western Region Prescott Champions after defeating Bungoma High School 22-3 in a final at Kakamega Showground 0n Wednesday.

Sebastian Ochieng coached side landed three tries, two conversions and one penalty to win the competition that saw Kakamega School, St Peter’s Mumias, Koyonzo High School and Musingu opted out.

Bungoma converted a penalty to make it 3-0 in the opening minutes of the match. They would control the early stages of the game before an injury break. After the break, the contest swung Vihiga’s way, and they began off strong, putting their opponents on the back foot for the majority of the first half.

Despite camping in Bungoma’s zone, the offence spearheaded by adventurous playmaker Michael Lukusi was unable to finish. Owen Kedera scored the game-tying penalty, leaving the game at 3-3.

Their pursuit continued until loosehead prop Moses Bulemi barged over for the game’s first try, off a ruck. Kedera added the extras to make the score 10-3.

The score remained unchanged until the halfway break.

Bungoma looked better in the second half, but Vihiga were more clinical. Lukusi’s vision allowed him to cut through the defense and put through Daniel Wafula for a try near the posts. Kedera converted the try, bringing the score to 17-5.

Lukusi and Wafula would link again in the left corner, with the playmaker’s punt sending Wafula through for the game’s third try.

Vihiga held on to win the Prescott title last won by Kakamega School in 2019.  They join Kisii, Kabianga and Ofafa Jericho who have also booked dates in the National Competition.

The National Competition is scheduled for 14 July at RFUEA Grounds.
