Kenya 7s registered the first win of the tournament beating Wales 19-14 to finish third in the Toulouse 7s Pool B on Saturday.

Shujaa will now feature in the ninth-place quarters scheduled for Saturday night.  Wales finished bottom in the pool.

Shujaa had lost their opening two matches and were out of the Cup contention. They were keen to win pick the first win and scored the opening try through Herman Humwa with the try being converted by Tony Omondi for a 7-0 lead.

Ewan Rosser pulled back but Shujaa reclaimed the lead through Humwa.  In the second half, Billy Odhiambo landed the third try  for Kenya to move to 19-7 before  Morgan Williams cut the gap to five after a converted try but Shujaa held on.

Samoa topped the Pool D handing South Africa a 19-7 defeat in the final match of the pool.  The defeat means South Africa who are currently the World 7s Series log leaders will miss the cup quarters for the first time since 2013.  The defeat means Argentina and Australia have a chance to close the gap between them and SA on top of the log.

Vaa Apelu Maliko bagged a brace before Steve Rimoni added the third try for a 19-7 halftime lead for Samoa after Melani Matava’s two conversions. SA tried to come back in the game but only managed one try through Ronald Brown in the 12th minute.

Ireland confirmed the second spot in the pool after 26-21 win over Spain 7s. Jordan Conroy, Terry Kennedy, Zac Ward and Andrew Smith were Ireland’s try scorers.

New Zealand will also miss out on the Cup quarter-finals for the first time ever after losing 29-14 to Australia who eventually topped Pool C.

All Blacks 7s lost 29-14 with Henry Hutchison bagging two tries while Ben Dowling, Corey Toole and Dietrich Roache added more tries for Australia.  NZ tries were from Leroy Carter and Amanaki Nicole.
