Koyonzo High School are the Kakamega County Rugby 7s Champions after defeating St Peters with a score of 21-10 in a thrilling final match held on Saturday in Kakamega.
The National Champions displayed exceptional skill and determination throughout the three-day competition, successfully defending their title they won last year.
Koyonzo victory over Saints
They secured the win by scoring three tries, all of which were converted for extra points. Jackson Siketa, Darell Omondi, and Brandon Mulefu each contributed a try to their team’s impressive victory. St Peters, on the other hand, managed to score two converted tries.
With this triumph, Koyonzo High School will advance to the upcoming Western Region games as the reigning Kakamega County Champions.
They will be joined by the second-placed team, St Peter’s Mumias, as well as hosts Kakamega School and Mukumu Boys.
In the third-place playoff match, Kakamega School edged Mukumu 12-10, securing their spot in the regional games scheduled to take place at Kakamega School.
Koyonzo’s head coach, Elly Okwemba, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and emphasized their commitment to defending the title in the upcoming regional games.
“We are putting in a lot of effort in our preparation, and we are optimistic that we will successfully defend our trophy,” stated Okwemba in an interview with Scrummage Africa.
Mukuku aim higher
Allan Kasiti, the coach of Mukumu, expressed his delight at qualifying for the regional games and set aspirations for his team, aiming for a top-four finish in the fiercely competitive tournament.
“This is the second year for most of our players, and I am proud of how they performed. As a young team, we are confident as we head to the regional games, and our goal is to finish in the top four. We are determined to build upon last year’s performance when we reached the quarterfinals,” commented Kasiti to Scrummage Africa.
