Rugby Super Series: KRU Championship sides added to mix as franchise composition is confirmed

The Kenya Rugby Union has confirmed the addition of KRU Championship sides to the 2024 Rugby Super Series set to commence in May 2024.

2005 champions Buffaloes who will be based in Kakamega will comprise Kenya Cup Champions Kabras RFC, Kisumu RFC and Catholic Monks.  Western Bulls and MMUST have been added to the franchise. The team will don the jersey white and Blue.

Cheetahs who will be based in Nakuru town will have Menengai Oilers, Nakuru RFC and relegated Homeboyz RFC. Promoted Impala, relegated Kabarak University and University of Eldoret have been also included in the franchise, Their jersey will be Red and white.

KCB Rugby, Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad and Mwamba will form Lions squad. They are joined by Championship sides JKUAT Cougars, South Coast Pirates and USIU Maritals. The Lions will have Green and Black as their jersey.

Rhinos will have Ngong road club’s Kenya Harlequin, Nondies and varsity side Strathmore Leos. Daystar Falcons, Mean Machine and Mombasa have also joined the list of this Franchise. They will have yellow and black as their jersey.

Players and coach for each of the sides will be confirmed later. Rhinos are the most successful franchise in RSS history with six titles in 2003,2007,2009,2010,2011 and 2012.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

The  Series returns after 10 years and the 2024 edition will showcase four men’s teams and two women’s teams, with the men’s teams representing Kenya Cup Clubs and the women’s teams comprising members of the National Lionesses’ squad.

The men’s tournament format will involve each team playing against the other three over the first three match days held at different venues: KCB Sports Club in Ruaraka, Nairobi; Nakuru Athletics Club in Nakuru; and The Bull Ring in Kakamega.

The top two teams will advance to the final, while the remaining two will compete for the last two positions at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.

The Rugby Super Series 2024 is scheduled to take place on four Saturdays (4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th of May 2024), with matches planned for Nairobi on the first and last weekends and in Nakuru and Kakamega in between.
