Nakuru-based Kenya Cup side Menengai Oilers and Kenya 7s are set to receive a major injury boost as speedster Denis Abukuse resumes training after a long layoff.
The Kenyan International got an injury setback in August 2023 during the Christie 7s in Nairobi while turning out for the Oilers against the Nondies.
The speedster was ruled out in the first half after a head collision with teammate Chrispine Shitundo. At that point, Abukuse was on a scoring spree having touched down a whopping 13 tries for the Oilers before the injury brought his scoring form to a halt.
“Am glad I am now back to training after close to two months in the cold, of course, I missed rugby and I have resumed gym sessions according to the program given by my SnC, I can’t wait to be back soon on the pitch,” he told the Scrummage Africa.
The Bungoma School alumnus became increasingly influential for Shujaa since making his cameo debut on 4th November 2022 during the Hong Kong 7s series crossing over the whitewash ten times, after nine tournaments for the national team.

Abukuse will be a key addition for both Oilers and Shujaa as the former prepares for the upcoming Kenya Cup season that commences in a fortnight, while the latter is gearing up for the Safari 7s, HSBC qualification and Olympics.
Should he be ready for selection, Abukuse will provide Kenya 7s head coach Kevin Wambua with depth to pick his squad, something he admits he’ll have to fight for his number in the team.
“Once I am ready and fully fit to take on the pitch, I know I’ll have to fight for playing position, several good players are with the national team currently and I’ll have to work extra hard to don the national kit and continue from where I left,” he stated.
“Am looking forward to getting back and helping Shujaa get back to HSBC. For Oilers we have targets, that include winning the maiden Kenya Cup I believe this will be our season, ” Abukuse concluded.
The 2022 Kenya Cup season kicks off on 25th November.
