Nelson Oyoo landed two tries as Kenya 7s staged a comeback to beat Uruguay 24-19 in the final Pool B match played on Saturday at Allianz Stadium.
Kenya now finish third in pool B with five points and are out of the cup quarters following back to back losses to South Africa and New Zealand.
Both Kenya and Uruguay had suffered back to back defeats and were hoping to win this encounter to end day one on a high note.
Uruguay had bright start retaining possession from kick off before their captain Diego Ardao chipped the ball over Kenyan defence and later race to retrieve the ball and score.
Kenya struggled to break Uruguay and conceded the second try when Mateo Vinals dived over at the left corner for the second try for a 12-0 lead.
Kenyan captain Nelson Oyoo produced clean pair of heels to cut the gap to seven points just before halftime.
In the second half, Alvin Otieno came on and scored at the corner to reduce the gap to two points.
Anthony Omondi then pounced on a loose ball and set up Oyoo for his second try that was under the posts and gave Kenya a 17-14 lead after a successful conversion.
Shujaa opened the gap further when Omondi sold a dummy and slipped past the defence for a try he converted for a 24-14.
Ardao’s kick an chase tactic earned him another try but the side missed a conversion attempt that would have trimmed the gap to three points. Kenya held on and despite late pressure, they won the match 24-19.
The two sides now shift focus on the ninth place playoff scheduled for Sunday.
