Kabras RFC began their 12th Kenya Cup campaign in dominant fashion, registering a 67-6 victory over MMUST in the Lurambi Derby at the Kakamega Showground on Saturday.
Heading into the clash, MMUST carried the tag of being the only side to beat Kabras since February 2022, a narrow 14-13 win at the Victoria 15s tournament in November 2023.
Kabras RFC run on day 1
Kabras entered the fixture with an impressive record of 10 straight Kenya Cup day-one victories, including a 56-0 win over MMUST in 2021. The two sides had met three times previously in the league, with Kabras winning all three: 56-0 in 2021, 36-14 in 2022 and 21-0 in 2023, a match in which they narrowly missed a bonus point.
The millers settled early, striking through quick tries from Asuman Mugerwa and Jeanson Misoga, with Jone Kubu converting Misoga’s effort for a 12-0 lead.
MMUST got onto the scoreboard through former Kabras fly-half Flavian Otiyo, who punished his former employers with a long-range penalty to make it 12-3.
Kabras scrum-half Roy Maruti restored the momentum moments later, sniping from the base to score, with Kubu adding the extras for a 19-3 lead.

Last season’s top try scorer, Griffin Chao, then opened his 2025 account in trademark fashion. He cut in from the right wing, breezed past his markers and grounded a well-worked try that Kubu converted for a 26-3 advantage.
MMUST closed the half with a penalty, taking the match to a 26-6 halftime score.
Kabras resumed control immediately after the break, with Mugerwa grabbing his second try shortly after MMUST lost Churchill Oyugi to injury. Kubu then sold a smart dummy to score under the posts as the lead stretched to 36-6.
Kabras RFC late pressure
The pressure from the Sugarmen continued to mount. A well-executed maul delivered another try for a 41-point tally. Barry Robinson followed with a brilliant solo effort, dancing past defenders to score under the posts, with Siketi converting for a 48-6 lead.
Substitute Teddy Akala powered over from the maul to push Kabras to 53-6. Chao then completed his brace after being set up by Mathias Osimbo as the floodgates remained open.
Maruti sealed the emphatic win, pouncing on a loose MMUST ball to round off the scoring at 67-6.
