URU postpones weekend matches after player dies after surgery

The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has postponed all matches scheduled for this weekend following the passing of Kampani Eagles RFC player Ronnie Kayondo.

Kayondo passed away after undergoing surgery for an injury sustained during a rugby match last weekend. As a show of solidarity and mourning, URU has rescheduled all matches to next weekend.

URU statement

“In light of the unfortunate incident that occurred on Saturday, 8th February 2025, where Ronnie Kayondo from Kampani Eagles RFC passed on after undergoing surgery for an injury sustained during a rugby match, we have made the difficult decision to postpone all scheduled games,” read a statement from URU Hon. Secretary Peter Odong.

“In consideration of the shock and dismay this has caused within the rugby fraternity, and in the spirit of solidarity to mourn our dearly departed, the Uganda Rugby Union, in consultation with club leadership, key stakeholders, and the wider rugby community, has resolved to reschedule all matches and observe two weeks of mourning.”

As a result, all matches originally slated for 15th February 2025 have been moved to 22nd February 2025. This includes fixtures in the Nile Special Rugby Premiership, Reserve Premierships, Women’s Premiership, and the Regional Championship.

“On behalf of the URU Executive Committee, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to the rugby family for their teamwork, support, and selflessness during this difficult time. The prompt intervention of our medical society has demonstrated their vital role as a pillar of our sport. We are also grateful for the overwhelming condolence messages from across the Union and the show of love towards the family of our dearly departed,” Odong added.

“We wish safe travels to all those who have journeyed to bid farewell to Ronnie Kayondo. His legacy will continue to be honored in various rugby activities across the country.”
