Shujaa needed an extra-time try to overcome a resilient Uruguay side with a 19-14 victory in a closely contested semifinal in Paris.

Kenya 7s determination

After missing the quarterfinals and being out of gold contention, Shujaa was determined to secure their first win in the competition. Uruguay adopted a tactic similar to Samoa’s to deny Shujaa possession, with Juan Manuel Tafernaberry scoring the first try, which was converted for a 7-0 lead.

alftime. However, Shujaa came back stronger in the second half, with John Okoth racing clear to score in the left corner. The scores were tied at 7-7 after Tony Omondi converted from a tight angle.

Kenya took the lead for the first time in the match when Samuel Asati’s quick tap off a penalty allowed him to dive over the line under the posts, giving Kenya a 14-7 lead after another successful conversion by Tony Omondi.

Shujaa thought they would hold on to this slim lead, but their plan was disrupted when Okoth was yellow-carded in the dying minutes of the clash. Baltazar Amaya scored the try off the resultant scrum, and Guillermo Lijtenstein converted to send the game to extra time.

The Olympics Rugby games will take a break on Friday to pave the way for the opening ceremony.
