The Uganda rugby fraternity is mourning the death of Ugandan international and Black Pirates player Sydney Gongodyo.
Both the Uganda Rugby Union and Black Pirates confirmed his passing through statements on their social media platforms. However, neither party disclosed the cause of death.
In a brief statement, the Uganda Rugby Union paid tribute to the player, saying:
“Dark day for Uganda Rugby. Rest in eternal peace, Sydney Gongodyo.”

His parent club, Black Pirates, also confirmed the sad news and requested privacy for the family during this difficult period.
“A sea robber to the bone has sailed his sail. No more sea billows for him. Till we meet again, Sydney. Further updates to follow. We shall appreciate the privacy and prayers for the family,” the club stated.
Gongodyo was in Nairobi over the weekend as part of the Black Pirates squad that featured in the Enterprise Cup final at RFUEA Grounds. The Ugandan champions finished runners-up after falling 25-12 to Kabras Sugar RFC.

The versatile player was a key figure for both Black Pirates and the Uganda national team, representing his country in several regional and international competitions including Rugby Africa Cup and Elgon Cup.
Tributes have continued to pour in from teammates, clubs, and rugby fans across East Africa as the rugby community comes to terms with the loss of one of Uganda’s finest players.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements and official memorial activities are expected to be communicated by the family and the club in due course.
