Kenya 7s let a 14-0 lead slip, losing 21-14 to Fiji in their second match of the Perth 7s played on Friday.

This result likely see Shujaa miss the quarterfinals yet again this season. Both teams entered the match seeking redemption after opening losses—Kenya fell 29-14 to New Zealand, while Fiji lost 24-17 to Uruguay.

Kenya 7s start

The game began with high intensity, as Shujaa, spurred on by vocal Kenyan fans, earned several turnovers against Fiji.

Nygel Amaitsa opened the scoring for Kenya, capitalizing on a kick behind the Fijian defence and racing to ground the ball for a 7-0 lead, converting his own try.

The fans erupted, and moments later, Samuel Asati spotted a gap on the right flank, picking the ball from a ruck to score Kenya’s second try.

Amaitsa extended the lead to 14-0 with a successful conversion. However, Fiji pulled one back before halftime, with Joji Nasova scoring after a series of offloads, cutting the deficit to 14-7.

In the second half, Fiji maintained their momentum, with Joseva Talacolo completing a flowing move with a try that Iowane Teba converted, leveling the scores at 14-14.

Shujaa fell behind for the first time when Nasova broke through the Kenyan defence to score under the posts, making it 21-14. Amaitsa had a chance to bring Kenya back into the game, but he was tackled while attempting an offload, losing possession in the process.

This defeat marks Fiji’s 14th consecutive win over Kenya in the World Rugby Sevens Series.

Shujaa will now face a resurgent Uruguay side—who have already beaten both New Zealand and Fiji—on Saturday at 7:00 AM.
