National Champs Koyonzo, Mwira win Matungu Sub County 7s as more school embrace rugby

National Champions Koyonzo Boys Rugby and Mwira Girls Rugby had a bright start, winning the Matungu Sub-county rugby 7s games to qualify for the County games.

Koyonzo Stormers had a massive run in the competition, winning the Matungu Sub-County title following a 61-0 win over Mwira Boys.

The Stormers, who are also East Champions, won all their matches from the group stage to the final. They scored 293 points, averaging 59 points per match, and did not concede any points.

The school, which claimed third place in the Scrummage Katch 7s tournament this year, has now proceeded to the County games alongside Mwira.

In the girls’ category, National Champions Mwira Girls showed their might as they won all their five matches for 15 points. Koyonzo settled for the second spot in the pool to qualify for the County games.

Mwira, who finished second in this year’s Scrummage Katch 7s, will be hoping to go all the way and win the Kakamega County and Western Region titles.

Matungu sub-county has shown growth in rugby, with Koyonzo boys dominating National 7s for the last two years, while Mwira emerged as the girls’ winners in 7s when the games returned to the schedule.

The region only had three boys’ schools playing rugby in 2017, and the number has now risen to eight boys’ schools and six girls’ schools playing rugby.
