Kenya 7s head coach Damian McGrath has explained why regulars Alvin Otieno, Bush Mwale and Daniel Taabu missed the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens Squad which was named on Friday.
According to the coach, Otieno commonly referred to as Buffa withdrew from the squad. The coach says the sevens forward has left the sevens program and he is set to pursue his personal interest.
Big Blow
McGrath described Otieno’s exit as a big blow to Shujaa describing him as one of the best forwards in the World in the shorter version.
“We have got a number of withdrawals, not of our choosing. We’ve lost Alvin Otieno who has left the program to pursue personal interests…which is a big blow because he is one of the world’s best sevens forwards,” McGrath is quoted by KRU media.

On Taabu and Mwale’s omission, the coach says the two had internal disciplinary issues which have since been solved but led to their exclusion from the final squad for the World Cup.
“We’ve lost Daniel Taabu and Bush Mwale for internal disciplinary matters which have been dealt with but necessitated them being left out of this particular squad. It’s a blow to the team but we are confident with the squad we have selected,” he said.
Shujaa have been drawn to play Tonga in the opening match, for a chance to face Argentina.
