Kenya 7s Head Coach Damian McGrath has announced his squad for the Commonwealth Games scheduled for Coventry Stadium from 29 July 2022.

The Coach has included Willy Ambaka,  Billy Odhiambo and skipper Nelson Oyoo who will be returning to the Commonwealth Games after featuring in the 2018 edition.

Ambaka and Odhiambo are set for their third consecutive Commonwealth Games squad, having first featured at the 2014 Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and in 2018 in Australia.

Vincent Onyala is also back after missing the World 7s Series while on duty with Kenya Simbas.  Kevin Wekesa, Tony Omondi, Johnstone Olindi, Edmund Anya, Daniel Taabu, Bush Mwale are all traveling.

It will be McGrath’s third tournament with the Shujaa having taken over in mid-May replacing Innocent Simiyu. McGrath led Shujaa during the Toulouse and London 7s where Shujaa struggled in the pool stage.

Shujaa are in Pool D and will renew rivalry with Uganda 7s who beat them in  Rugby Africa Men’s 7s held in April 2022 to qualify for Rugby World Cup and this commonwealth tournament. The Pool also has London 7s champions Australia who claimed their first Series gold medal since 2018 with a golden point victory over the All Blacks Sevens.

The tournament was originally scheduled to take place at Villa Park, but it will instead take place at the Coventry Stadium in Coventry.  16 teams will feature in the men’s tournament at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
