Ebubayi Secondary School in Luanda Sub County, Vihiga County, recently received a full set of rugby kits from KCB RFC, through KCB Bank, demonstrating the bank’s support for the sport.

This generous donation followed a term one games incident where a student from Ebubayi was photographed playing rugby in jeans shorts, which went viral.

Wilson Adala, the rugby coach at Ebubayi Secondary School, shared the team’s journey and challenges.

“Last year, I founded a rugby team at Ebubayi Secondary. They played in the Luanda sub-county games competition and emerged as number one, beating all odds to qualify for the county games at Vihiga High School,” Adala told Scrummage Africa.

Despite being a new team, they showed impressive performance against seasoned teams like Vihiga, Chavakali, Nyangori, and Senende.

The team’s lack of proper kits was a significant challenge, but they displayed remarkable resilience.

“We managed to win two matches despite being the only team without proper kits. At times, our students were mistaken for ‘mamluki’ (villagers who had infiltrated the school games) because of their attire,” Adala added.

Adala credits the young photographer for capturing the now-viral photos, which played a crucial role in drawing attention to their plight.

“Through a young photographer who took photos of the boys in those dirty clothes, we went viral on social media,” Adala said.

Adala is optimistic about the future, stating, “We are aiming for a regionals slot this 7s season.”

With their new kits and continued determination, Ebubayi Secondary School’s rugby team is set to make significant strides in upcoming competitions.
