Being a school in a region not traditionally viewed as a rugby powerhouse, Wareng’ High School aims to change that by hosting its first-ever rugby 7s tournament.

The school, located in Eldoret, an area dominated by athletics, will hold the tournament on the 1st and 2nd of June.

Speaking to The Scrummage Africa, the tournament director, a Kenya Rugby Union referee, Robinson Kiplagat, said they expect high-intensity weekend matches with some big schools confirming participation.

“Some top schools across the region have confirmed their participation, therefore this promises to be a tough tournament,” Kiplagat said.

Rift Valley Term 1 finalists, St. Patrick’s Iten and Kapsabet Boys, are among the teams that have already confirmed their participation.

On the girls’ side, several teams, including Nasakol Girls, Bwake, and Itigo, have also confirmed their participation.

Kiplagat stated that they aim to change the perception that Eldoret is only known for athletics.

“Many people and residents here believe that Eldoret is only for athletics and cannot have rugby. We want to change this as we are looking forward to having this yearly,” Kiplagat concluded.
