The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) has moved swiftly to address serious allegations of misconduct and poor governance following a turbulent fallout after the Lady Sables’ return from the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup qualifiers in Côte d’Ivoire.
In a statement released today, the ZRU announced the temporary suspension of its President, Mr. Losson Mtongwiza, and Zimbabwe Women’s Rugby Chairperson, Ms. Regina Mwanandiwa, pending a full investigation into allegations of harassment and financial mismanagement.
“Following recommendations from the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) and its Extraordinary General Meetings (EGM) held on 6th May 2025, the NEB has resolved to temporarily suspend ZRU President Mr. Losson Mtongwiza and Zimbabwe Women’s Rugby Chairperson Ms. Regina Mwanandiwa pending further inquiry.”
“This action arises following the subsequent inquiry into and pronouncements where allegations of wrongdoing surfaced. Effectively, the individuals Mr. Losson Mtongwiza and Ms. Regina Mwanandiwa are required to surrender all rugby-related roles and will not represent any face of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union during this period of suspension, whilst an inquiry is in effect until the ongoing inquiry and all related pronouncement have been fully exhausted.”

“The ZRU is fully committed to its ideals and to operating within the confines of its constitution,” the statement read.
The Lady Sables had returned home after enduring poor conditions and little support during the qualifiers in Côte d’Ivoire. Instead of receiving the promised allowances and a warm welcome, they were subjected to a vicious verbal attack by Mtongwiza, which has sparked widespread condemnation across Zimbabwe’s sporting community.
Dr. Tapfuma Parirenyatwa has been appointed Acting President, while Themba Ncube assumes the role of Acting Vice President. The Zimbabwe Women’s Board will announce an interim chairperson through its internal processes.
In reaffirming its position, the ZRU stated, “The NEB assures the public that every effort will be made to resolve these matters promptly and fairly, with a view to restoring confidence in the Union’s governance.”
