The Nationwide Rugby League affiliates have raised serious concerns over the ongoing leadership wrangles within the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU).
In a statement released after their meeting on 17th March 2025 and signed by the Chairman Walter Orangi, the affiliates warned that the instability at the union’s top leadership is negatively impacting the development of rugby, particularly the Nationwide League.
Key Concerns Raised by Nationwide Affiliates
1. Concern Over KRU Boardroom Conflict
The affiliates expressed deep worry over the ongoing disputes within the KRU Board. They noted that these conflicts are affecting rugby operations and disrupting the smooth running of the Nationwide League, which plays a crucial role in Kenya’s rugby structure.
2. Demand for Transparency and Accountability
The group called on KRU Chairman Alexander “Sasha” Mutai and Hon. Secretary Raymond Olendo to explain the root cause of the boardroom conflicts. They have requested the two leaders to attend their next meeting before the KRU Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 25th March 2025 to address these concerns.

3. Call for Unity Among Nationwide Affiliates
The Nationwide League affiliates urged their members to stand together and push for the recognition and respect they deserve within Kenya’s rugby governance. They emphasized the need for collective decision-making to ensure their voices are heard.
4. Seeking Financial Independence
Due to a lack of adequate support from KRU, the affiliates highlighted the urgent need to seek an independent sponsor to sustain the Nationwide League. They believe this will help secure the league’s future and ensure its continued growth.
5. Urgent Call to Action
The affiliates insisted on an immediate resolution to the governance issues at KRU to prevent further mismanagement. They reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for good leadership, fairness, and equal support for all leagues in Kenya.
With the AGM fast approaching, the rugby community will be closely watching how the KRU leadership responds to these demands.
