Western Nationwide side Busia Borderrucks emerged victorious in the Herbert Wafula Memorial Cup, defeating Uganda’s Walukuba Trojans 31-10 in an encounter held over the weekend.

The match was a tribute to the late Herbert Wafula, whose contributions to rugby in East Africa were monumental. Wafula, a former captain of the Uganda Rugby Cranes, led the team to their first-ever away victory against Kenya and secured the Africa Cup Tier 2 title in 2002. His legacy as a player, coach, and administrator was a guiding light for the sport in the region.

In the match itself, Busia Borderrucks displayed dynamic attacking flair, with Lorima Omondi leading the charge. Omondi crossed the whitewash twice, both of his tries were successfully converted by Ian Odhiambo.

Martin Omondi added to the scoreboard with a well-taken try, though the conversion attempt fell short. Allan Okanga also powered through the Trojans’ defence for another unconverted try.

The finishing touches came from Emmanuel Ojiambo, whose try was converted by the reliable boot of Odhiambo, sealing a comprehensive victory for the Borderrucks.

Walukuba Trojans showed resilience but could only manage two unconverted tries, as the Borderrucks’ defence remained resolute throughout the clash.

The Herbert Wafula Memorial Cup served as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact of Wafula’s contributions to rugby. His achievements as a player, coach, and administrator continue to inspire players and fans across East Africa.
