Kabras RFC, MMUST RFC, Kenya Harlequin, KCB  Rugby and Menengai Oilers were off to flying starts winning their Kakamega Ingo 7s openers at Kakamega Showground on Saturday morning.

Nondies, Homeboyz, and Strathmore Leos were also among round winners all moving to three points following the wins.

Christie 7s champions Kabras opened their home tournament on a high, Erick Cantona benefitting from an offload to race clear for the home team’s first try.

Patrick Lumumba would cut back inside to catch Blad napping for the Sugarmen second. Blad would pull back one at the stroke of half-time, skipper Wesonga stepping and fending before scoring for a 14-5 halftime score.

Kabras were quick off the blocks, William Mwanji stepping two defenders for an easy opening try. Two more tries from Jackton Osoo and Mwanji were enough for to kick off the leaders’ campaign on a high, 31-5 the full-time scores.

MMUST were rampant in the opening Group A match, stunning Western Bulls 46-0 to lead Pool A.

Kakamega Ingo 7s Pool B

Nondies got their tournament going with a 21-5 win over City mates Mwamba. Three converted tries were enough to hand Ben Nyambua charges maximum points.

Christie 7s finalists Kenya Harlequins cruised past Daystar Falcons 34-7 to lead Pool B with three points like Nondies but have a superior point differential.

Group C

Oilers shrugged off a two-point deficit at halftime to see off a determined Kisumu 27-5 in the first match of the third pool.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

They were joined on three points by Homeboyz who edged Catholics Monks.  Catholic Monks were hoping to continue their brilliant form against Homeboyz in the second game of Group C, hitting twice in close succession before Homeboyz responded with two of their own before halftime.

An edgy second half would see the Deejayz open the scoring before the Monks strung together multiple offloads to score their third. Homeboyz would hold on to win the match 17-15.

Kakamega Ingo 7s Group D

KCB were too strong for Christie 7s Division 2 winners Stallions, easily putting six tries past the newly promoted side for a 34-0 full-time score. Kenya U2o youngster Michael Wamalwa ran three tries while Bob Muhati, Emmanuel Opondo and Austin Sikutwa added a try each.

Sikutwa’s try was counted despite him dropping the ball as he touched down.

Strathmore got the better of Nakuru, only one try separating the two at the death, Matoka Matoka getting on the scoreboard twice before Victor Odhiambo sealed the Leos’ victory.
