KRU sets up touch rugby tournament to fundraise for Scotland-bound Kenya U20

The Kenya Rugby Union has set up a touch rugby fundraising tournament to help raise funds for the Kenya U20 side Chipu.

Chipu are set for the World Junior Trophy and are currently training in Nairobi for the matches set for Scotland in July.

The tournament set for RFUEA grounds is dubbed #ChiputoScotland Touch Tournament and will kick off at 10:00 a.m. and gate charges will be Ksh 300.

“This Saturday, 22nd June, Friends of Chipu and KRU will be hosting a touch tournament to fundraise for the team as they head to Scotland for the #WorldRugbyU20Trophy,” the Union announced.

The Chipu side is training in Nairobi and has had several sessions including combined sessions with the senior side Kenya Simbas.

The 35-man Chipu squad has been in a residential camp at the Kenya Academy of Sport, with their training sessions held at Peponi School and KCB Sports Club.

The Africa Champions are placed in Pool B alongside the USA, Uruguay, and the Netherlands.

In Pool A, host Scotland and Japan are set to face off against Hong Kong and Samoa. The teams will compete on a round-robin basis in the group stage to determine the final pool rankings.

The final rankings will see the pool toppers compete in the final, while the runners-up face off in the bronze final. Third-placed teams will battle for fifth place, while the bottom-placed teams will compete for seventh place.

Kenya U20, commonly known as Chipu, will tackle Uruguay in the opener on Tuesday, July 2, at 4:30 p.m. E.A.T. In their second match, Chipu will face the Netherlands on Sunday, July 7, at 9:45 p.m. E.A.T.

In their final pool match, Kenya will take on the USA on Friday, July 12, 2024.
