Strathmore Leos, the defending champions of the Embu 7s tournament, have officially announced their squad for the upcoming 2023 edition.

The team, filled with exceptional talent, includes notable players such as Kenya Simbas back Andrew Matoka, who recently returned from a stint in the USA with Principia College, and Brunson Madigu, who represented Kenya 7s in the World Series earlier this year.

Shem Kola, Barnabas Owuor, Gabriel Ayimba, Richard Liva, Levy Masiga, Stephen Osumba, Nygel Amaitsa, Collins Maina, Victor Odhiambo, and Joseph Ayiro are also on board for the trip

Having clinched the title in 2022 by defeating the 2019 champions, Menengai Oilers, in a thrilling final, Strathmore Leos are determined to maintain their winning streak and secure the bragging rights once again. In the final, they emerged victorious with a score of 19-12, courtesy of tries and conversions by Madigu, Philemon Olang, and Owuor.

The Embu 7s tournament, set to take place at Njukiri Showground on June 10th and 11th, promises to be a thrilling display of rugby talent.

The participating teams have been divided into five competitive pools, with the Leos placed in Pool A alongside Meru RFC, Kabarak University, and Kabete Stallions. Each team will battle it out in the pool stage, aiming to secure a spot in the knockout rounds and ultimately vie for the coveted championship title.

The presence of the Menengai Oilers, the team that Strathmore Leos conquered in the previous edition’s final, adds an exciting element to the tournament as they are placed in Pool B alongside Kirinyaga Stallions, Northern Suburbs, and NYS Spades.
